The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Since we are going out of town Saturday morning, we have scheduled our walk through with our contractor Friday evening.  After we leave, we will not be back until the following Friday, and we have movers scheduled to move us in that afternoon.  With our move in date in T-minus 8 days, I would think that we are past the point of things going wrong, but sadly I am wrong.

The good right now is that most of our lighting is in, and has been installed.  We purchased all of our lighting from Ferguson, and thanks to the design help from Wendy Wittenberg, my lighting looks amazing in the house.  Also all of our hardwood floors have been sanded, and the original floors look like new.  There were workers over at the house last night staining the floors and because of this I cannot go by until our walk through on Friday, but I cannot wait to see them.  Finally the drive way was paved yesterday and it is such an improvement over the cracked, uneven driveway that we had.

The bad for the week consist of several small items that has stressed me out and made me lose sleep, again.  They installed our oven yesterday and I was excited to see how nice it looked in the cabinets.  I went to open it up and found out that the oven door will only open part way because it hits the trim on the door frame.  We have had several issues with our cabinet company, and this just pushed me over the edge.  When we signed off on the final design, I did not think to check to ensure that the cabinet was far enough over so we could open the oven door.  If the oven was a half of an inch further to the left, this would not be an issue.  Unfortunately the granite is installed and the tiling on the back splash has started, so we cannot easily take out the cabinets to change this.  My contractor has come up with a solution to trim down the molding on the doorway so that it is not so thick.  Hopefully this will resolve this issue.
They also had to tear out the hardwood in the lading in the addition because once they installed the hardwood on the stairs, it was a 1/4 inch taller than the hardwood on the lading.  They are going to replace it with new hardwood but I hate that they had to tear it out when they should have been staining it with the rest of the floors .

The ugly...see below...

We did not ask for them to pave this piece of our yard, and although I understand that they were trying to make a place for the post office to drive on, it looks really bad.  We have asked the contractor to take this part out.

Under Pressure

Since my last blog 10 days ago, I have been really stressed and have stayed up worrying about all of the finishing details of our house.  I have not posted any new blogs because I was not happy with some of the paint color, and cabinet choices, so  I did not want to post any pictures until I figured out what we wanted to do.  Thanks to Travis and Alissa, they helped me correct my poor paint color choices, and now everything has been repainted and looks much better.  The color that we had for the mudroom/bonus room turned out too blue, so now it is a softer blue/gray/silver, and it looks amazing.  The kitchen cabinets turned out to have more yellow in them than I had thought, so the beige we had painted the kitchen turned out to have pink undertones that did not match well.  We went ahead and changed it to a cream for now which goes better with the cabinets, but down the road I hope to add a color to the kitchen once I can make up my mind.  Finally we had to repaint the kid's bathroom because the paint did not look right with the tile, so we changed it to the same blue/gray/silver as the bonus room.

The cabinets were finally installed last week and I was worried about the kitchen cabinet color and the fact that the vanilla had more yellow in it than I had expected.  Alissa was nice enough to go to the granite yard with me to double check that the granite that I had already chosen would look good with all of the cabinets.  Luckily once the granite counter tops were installed, it really helped to tie in the cabinet color with the kitchen, and once they repainted the kitchen walls, I was much happier with the look of the kitchen.  They are having to re-do one section of cabinets because the they did not bring the molding over all of the way to the edge and it makes it look unfinished.  Also I had them take out the kid's bathroom cabinets because they were an off white and I had asked for white.  Normally I would not mind, but the bathroom has three feet of white bead board on the walls, so the off white looked more cream against the white walls.  The cabinets should be reinstalled tomorrow and should be the same white as our trim.

This is the last week of construction and although the house still looks unfinished, there is not too much left to do.  We have to have the appliances and lighting installed and just some touch up painting.  Then Tuesday they are going to sand the floors and on Wednesday they are going to stain the floors Dark Walnut.  We are not able to go back in the house until Friday which is when the carpet will be installed and we have the appraisal scheduled.  At some point the garage door also needs to be installed, and the driveway poured  We are going out of town on Saturday for six days, so we are going to do our walk through on Friday and make our punch list of everything that needs to be corrected.  While we are out of town, Alissa is going to go check each day to make sure that everything is corrected so when we come home on Friday the 20th, we can move in!

The new front door has not been installed yet, but hopefully it will arrive this week.

First coat of Dark Walnut stain, this is the first wall color that we did not like once it was up.

This is the new color in the bonus room and mudoom, it looks so much better!

We went to Knoxville on Saturday for Michael and Holly's Wedding.  They were married outdoors at World's Fair Park, and although it was a little hot outside, we still had a great time celebrating with them.  Congrats, Mr. and Mrs. Honeycutt!
